The Challenge of Film Preservation: Historic film is fragile. Celluloid degrades over time, magnetic tape deteriorates, and digital formats become obsolete. Without intervention, decades of surf history, waves, athletes, and culture can vanish. The race to preserve these materials is real, and the stakes are high.
The archives held by the Nalu Film Foundation include some of the most significant surf and action sports footage ever captured — raw motion picture film reels, video tapes, and still photographs spanning multiple decades and formats. Each presents its own preservation challenges, and each requires specialized knowledge, equipment, and care.
Our Preservation Process: Begins with assessment. Every item in our archives is carefully cataloged and evaluated for condition, format, and historical significance. From there, our team works to stabilize fragile materials, digitize analog formats, and store everything in conditions designed to maximize longevity.
Digitization and scanning are critical steps: Converting film and tape to high-quality digital formats ensures that the content can be accessed, studied, and shared without further degrading the original materials. But digitization and scanning alone are not enough. Proper metadata, organization, and redundant storage are equally essential to a responsible archive.
The Human Side of Preservation: Beyond the technical work, preservation is deeply personal. Many of the filmmakers and photographers whose work we protect dedicated their lives to documenting surf culture. Honoring that work — treating it with the care and respect it deserves- is a responsibility we take seriously.
We work closely with filmmakers, their families, and the broader surf community to ensure that the stories behind the footage are captured alongside the footage itself. Context matters. A wave without a story is just water.
