Larry Haynes (July 2, 1961 - February 9, 2023) was a world-renowned surf cinematographer and filmmaker whose passion for capturing the raw power and beauty of ocean waves defined his life and career.
Born in 1961, and raised on California's Central Coast, where he first developed his passion for the ocean and photography. After graduating from high school in Central California, he moved to Hawaii in the 1980s. Haynes established himself on Oahu's North Shore and dedicated over three decades to documenting the surfing world, becoming a pillar of the North Shore community.
Known for his fearless approach to water cinematography, he often positioned himself in the heart of massive swells to film surfers in action. His work not only showcased elite athletes but also embodied the aloha and stoke he carried everywhere. Haynes' contributions extended beyond the lens; he was a beloved friend, father, and mentor in the surfing community, remembered for his infectious smile and positive energy.

Haynes began his filmmaking journey in the late 1980s, quickly becoming a master of surf cinema. He produced iconic film series Fluid Combustion that showcased high-performance surfing and featured surfers the best surfers in the world. His action-packed films captured the essence of the surfing culture with stunning water shots and resonant soundtracks.
In addition to his independent work, Haynes contributed to Hollywood projects, serving as a cinematographer on Chasing Mavericks(2012) and appearing in the documentary Fiberglass and Megapixels (2010). Known for his expertise in filming giant surf, he covered events like the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, capturing unforgettable moments at Waimea Bay shortly before his passing.

Haynes' lens took him to some of the most challenging and iconic surf spots around the globe. Based primarily on Oahu's North Shore, he captured footage at legendary Hawaiian breaks like Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Off the Wall, Backdoor, and Jaws on Maui.
His adventures extended internationally, filming at Maverick's in Northern California, known for its colossal waves, and Teahupoo in Tahiti, famous for its heavy barrels. Haynes was renowned for his wide-angle, in-water shots in extreme conditions, often spending hours in the impact zone to get the perfect angle, showcasing his dedication and bravery.
Larry Haynes left an indelible mark on the surfing world, inspiring generations of filmmakers and surfers with his innovative techniques and unwavering passion. Tragically, he passed away on February 9, 2023, shortly after a stand-up paddle session at Laniakea on Oahu's North Shore, where he captured his final wave on video before collapsing in the parking lot from a suspected heart attack.
His legacy lives on through his films, now remastered and available on Nalu TV, ensuring that his vision of the ocean's mana continues to inspire.
