Sonny Miller Archives
Sonny Miller started as a photographer in the 1980s, shooting still images for Surfer and Breakout Magazines. He was the host of the Surfer TV series and created some of the most iconic surf films, including the Rip Curl Search films in the early 90s. The award-winning movie Searching for Tom Curren is Sonny's finest work.
Sonny went on to work on many big Hollywood films and TV shows, leaving a lasting legacy behind.
Nalu Film Foundation is honored to house Sonny's archives and honor his legacy.
We have hundreds of thousands of feet of 16mm film that still needs to be scanned, video tapes, slides, and photos, and your support will help us preserve all of Sonny's archives and films for future generations.
Larry Haynes Archives
Larry Haynes, 1961-2023, was a prolific water cinematographer who logged more hours in the water shooting surfing than any other filmmaker in history. Larry loved swimming and surfing the powerful waves on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He would swim in the surf all day with his camera, get incredible shots, then grab his board for an evening surf session. Larry was a true waterman.
The Nalu Film Foundation is honored to have been entrusted with curating Larry Haynes’ archive, and there is still a significant amount of Larry’s footage that needs to be archived appropriately. There are hundreds of hours of RED digital files, as well as Hi8, DV, Beta SP, and HDV videotapes that still need to be digitized, organized, and backed up. The Nalu Film Foundation has also been actively working to locate all the raw 16mm film he shot.
Larry’s film and video work is iconic, and it needs to be archived appropriately. We aim to preserve his footage and, in doing so, maintain the incredible surfing history he captured. Supporters of the Nalu Film Foundation will enable this work to take place.
Col Benson Archives
Colonel Albert Benson was stationed at Schofield Barracks as a lieutenant in 1967; his family lived on the North Shore, and he made a point of instilling in his children a love for the ocean. Fielding Benson, his son, has entrusted some of his father's 16mm film archives to the Nalu Film Foundation, and we are honored to preserve these iconic 16mm movies.
Colonel Benson loved surfing and cameras, becoming a prolific surf filmmaker who documented Hawaii's North Shore surf scene in the late 1960s and 1970s. He captured iconic images for films such as Scott Dittrich's Amazing Surf Stories and Follow the Sun, among many others.
We have many original 16mm film reels from the 1960s and 1970s that still need to be scanned, and your support helps us bring these classic reels back to life while preserving them for the historical documentation of surf culture.
